According to Victory Grill songwriter Scott West, "I wrote and arranged the song Victory Grill to honor all of the amazing, under appreciated and underpaid Blues musicians that played the Chitlin Circuit, and were among the greatest musicians of their day and all time." The song mentions many of these greats by name and is dedicated to them and to the famous Austin club/grill (The Victory Grill) and it's founder Johnny Holmes. Holmes opened the Victory Grill during the segregation period, so that Afro-American soldiers returning from World War II could have a venue, where they could publicly eat and enjoy a cold drink." Holmes brought in all of the greatest Blues musicians of his day and was perhaps the first person to consistently bring world class talent to Austin, Texas and what is now the LIVE music capital of the world.
The Victory Grill will be appearing on West's upcoming AUSTIN CD and in his AUSTIN Musical. West calls out James Brown during this song, because Brown hated the Blues and was such a harsh detractor of the genre that he did not even consider it music. West screams out "Hate On This Jimmy...Mr. Brown," before West's searing piano solos. If you are going to call out the God father of soul, you'd better back it up and bring it. West does just that with some of the fastest and meanest piano soloing that I have ever heard. If you ever get a chance to hear West play LIVE, you should know that he plays even faster LIVE than he does on his recordings.
